This quote is one of my very favorites. We are all unique with special gifts and talents that deserve to be shared with the world. In theory, it should be easy to express ourselves and to do it proudly. So why do we find it so hard to show our true selves online? I struggle with this, especially being so new to business blogging. It is far too easy to spend more time thinking about how to make my words appeal more to my reader, my ideal client, than to make sure that the words I am writing are authentic to the person I am.
Really, this kind of thinking is completely backwards, I am coming to realize. If I spend more time developing and honing my own voice, the people that I am writing these words for will respond with voices of their own. It is this kind of genuine conversation that I am looking forward to. My ultimate goal for this blog is to help people find the confidence to share their unique selves with the world and to help them develop the technical skills (via photography and design) that they need to do it proudly. Going forward, it is my plan to have every post I write accomplish one of those two things (even if it means being totally real with you all 
).
Now, I would love to hear what you have to say. What is the hardest thing about sharing who you are in your work and on your blog? If being you and only you online has become second nature for you, what advice do you have for the rest of us that are learning to have a voice?
I’ve always written how I talk, which was a pain back in school when I needed to have a different voice. Now that I’m writing for my own business I can really let loose and basically talk the blog post out in my head as I’m writing.
That must have been difficult back in school, but what a blessing now! I would love to get to the point where I can feel loose like that while writing. I will definitely try talking it out before typing. That might help me loosen up
Hi Desiree! Thanks for this post! When I first started my business, the hardest thing for me to share included glimpses of me in my personal life outside of the work I do. That included actually sharing the art I create that is so tied to me as a person, but not really what I do for a living. It’s been really eye-opening for me on how I can integrate this in a way that makes me feel “more like me” online.
It’s funny Kathryn, I have no problem sharing glimpses of my personal life here. My struggle up until this point is how to integrate the personal with the professional in a way that provides benefit to my reader. That integration is key for me because I love having my own little corner of the internet where I can share myself and inspire others to do the same. Good job finding that balance!
I find it’s helpful to pretend you’re writing an email to your best friend while you’re writing a blog post. If that’s not working, I’ll just write what I think needs to be said and then go back through and add more “me” and take out some “business” to find a happy medium. I just recently read somewhere that you should read everything you write out loud and if it doesn’t sound like something a human would say re-write it and try again. Good luck! If you’re not used to using your own voice (instead of your college research paper voice) it’s tricky to get used to

I have been trying to blog more often and my goal is once per week & occasionally twice. I have been getting better about this. I started a document in google drive with a list of blog topics as I think about them. That makes it SO much easier. I like to write a mix of informational posts and more personal posts that talk about fine art or art projects. I also started doing website spotlight posts showcasing websites that I have designed.

Find your voice and allow others to hone in on theirs. Authentic and genuine conversation is where it’s at. I actually wrote a post about this that can help you, it’s focused on email but it’s relevant – mainly, write like you’re speaking to one person. Your ideal client, or your best friend. That one person in mind. That’s how your true voice can come out much more easily. Don’t worry about others judging… or nay sayers. There will always be those. Just do YOU!
I love being me online, all over the place! I guess it’s kinda my thing. There are tricks to making it real without too much struggle. I actually just wrote about my “best kept secret” today: Write with your eyes closed. It will change everything.
